Stephen Bittrich
Screenwriter, playwright, and actor Stephen Bittrich came to New York
initially to become an actor. Having played several 'waiters' and 'security
guards' on all the New York soaps, Stephen is union member of SAG and AFTRA.
His favorite acting part was playing serial killer 'Bill Reach', in the
Philadelphia premiere of Lee Blessing's Down The Road, at the Walnut Street
Studio.
Stephen found his way back to his roots (due in part, no doubt, to his
English Professor father) and began his rewarding writing career.
As a playwright, Stephen has worked with several NYC theatre companies, but
now works primarily with The Drilling Company (78th Street Theatre) and Vital
Theatre (42nd Street). Stephen has had more than a dozen of his quirky one-acts
performed in these off-off-Broadway venues.
In theatre, he's proudest of his two full-lengths scripts, Desert Rites,
which was showcased at the Theatre Row Theatre, and Home of the Great Pecan,
his comic ode to his home-town of Seguin, Texas, which was produced by Panties
Optional Productions at 78th Street Theatre. The first scene of Home of the Great
Pecan started as a stand alone one-act called Brain Sucking, which was
produced at Actor's Theatre of Louisville in 1994 as one of their favorites in that
year's crop in the 10 Minute Play contest. Brain Sucking was subsequently
published in Dramatics Magazine in 1995, a magazine for theatre educators. Stephen
still gets the odd request from high schools around the country looking to produce it as
a theatre production.
Most recently, Stephen turned Desert Rites into a film script, and was a
Top 30 Finalist in the first Project Greenlight contest, whittled down from
thousands of applicants. Desert Rites is a Vegas vision quest. The story
hinges on socially stunted teenager, John Lancaster, who is on a journey to
become a man through the Native rites with a side trip to Vegas. Problem is,
John's wily newfound mentor in the Indian ways, Billy Ray, the essence of the
mythological trickster coyote, may be more interested in John's trust fund
than in guiding his journey to manhood.
Stephen is proud to be the winner of Agony's First Short Script Competition
with his rather demented (in a good way) short, The Vegetable.
Stephen lives on the Upper West Side of NYC with his wife and five year old girl.
